ABOUT - During my time with The Feast I produced two hackathons, a technology based hackathon with Partnership for a Healthier America as part of their Building a Healthy Future Summit and a hardware hackathon in partnership with FEMA and Department of Homeland Security simultaneous to The Feast 2014. The Partnership for a Healthier America Hackathon challenged 40 designers and developers to create new solutions to healthy eating with the two winning teams presenting at The Summit before Michelle Obama. The Civic Hardware Hackathon was a collaboration between The Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate, FEMA, Intel, IDEO and The Feast to help communities become more resilient in the aftermath of natural disasters. In both hackathons, new apps, websites and tools were built in the course of 24 hours.
MY ROLE - As the lead of both of these hackathons I recruited participants, mentors, judges and speakers. With the partners, I finalized the hackathon question language for participants to tackle. I also organized venue, meals, snacks and drinks for the 24 hours of hacking.
ATTENDANCE - The civic hardware hackathon took place during The Feast 2014 so conference attendees could offer feedback to the 20 hackathon participants alongside representatives from The White House and IDEO. Partners included Intel, Microsoft, IKEA, Sparkfun, 3D Systems, Do Good Bus and Red Hook Initiative. The Partnership for a Healthier America hackathon included 40 participants from New York and DC with representatives from local schools and the CEO of Partnerships for a Healthier America.
